January 2012

Please note that my posts are now on the New Build section of the web-site.

Finished playground!

Our new playground is now complete so the Infants will be able to use this when the building work starts in earnest!

The contract has now gone out to tender so it won’t be long before new contractors are on site. I hope they are as helpful and considerate of children as Mellwood Construction have been with the enabling works.

We have appointed an extra welfare assistant to help during the build. This will help ensure the health and safety of the children during this difficult time.Dec 17th 2009 Finished playground 001

December Update

New path

New path

We now have a new path to a new door in the main corridor. Very good progress is being made on the new playground and on the new office and waiting area where the Infant cloakroom used to be.

The staff who arrived at around 7.30am this morning couldn’t get into school as three huge lorries were blocking the entrance! There have been few disruptions of this kind so far though. Please let me know if you experience any problems with the contruction.

Enabling Works Progress

Mellwood construction have dug out mountains of topsoil in preparation for the new playground on the field side of school. The topsoil will be retained for future grounds projects. Work has actually started earlier than advertised this week – but I’m not complaining!

Today the cloakrooms were reorganised in order to vacate the bottom cloakroom. Work will start tomorrow to transform that space into a temporary office / waiting area.

E-Twinning Club

This club usually meets at lunchtime on Tuesdays. We are twinning with a school in Poland to find out about different approaches to recycling. We have already found out that the Polish school sends all its food waste to farms to feed the pigs, whilst our food waste from the kitchen is put into a “Whirl-o-waste” and goes into the drains. We are trying to make sure that all our fruit waste is composted. Today we got a new compost bin for the Nursery. We think Miss Hoare will be very pleased!

Enabling Works

Mellwood Construction will begin work constructing a tarmac play area outside the Infant Hall next week. This will mean that the Infant children will have somewhere to play once construction starts in earnest in 2010. The builders will be on site from 8am to 4.30pm and will be using the gates onto the field from Aintree Lane for access. The firm will also be converting the Infant Cloakrooms into an office and parent waiting area in the very near future.

Open Evening

The school will be open for all between 6-8pm on Wednesday  25th November. This will give all members of the community, including, of course, past pupils, a chance to see the school as it is now for one last time.

Enabling works will start shortly to allow the construction of the new building to begin in the new year. Come and look at the plans for the new school and see what’s going on in the classrooms.

If you’re looking for a school for your child, this is an opportunity for you to see what goes on at Aintree Davenhill.

New Build

I am delighted to be able to inform you that at last we have been given the go-ahead for a new build!  This will be a phased programme, probably over 3 years, and will not be a total rebuild.  We will retain our lovely big halls and newly refurbished canteen, which means that we will be restricted as to where the classrooms can be.  Plans will include the whole of the grounds as well as the buildings.  I am already working with the architect and your views will be sought in the near future.  If any of you have any particular interest or expertise in any aspect of building design then please let me know.

Keep informed about the new build by visiting my NEW BUILD PAGE.

Go Green Logo

Competition winner Ellen

This morning, Ellen Harrison from Holy Rosary RC Primary School, Aintree won the MADCOS (Maghull and District Community of Schools) design a logo competition. The logo was to represent the new “Go Green” Group which has representatives from all 13 primary schools and 3 high schools in the area.

The group aim to develop sustainability both in their schools and the local community. Sustainability is about everyone making small changes in their lives and contributing to the bigger picture. As Ellen’s winning logo says – together we can ‘Change the World’!

School Improvement Plan

Attached to the September newsletter was a brief overview of our School Improvement Plan.  Some of the areas we aim to improve during this academic year are;

Behaviour

The library

Parental links and support

Environmental aspects

We welcome any suggestions you might have about any of these areas.  Perhaps you have seen good practice somewhere else and want to share it?  Perhaps you know someone who could help or would like to help yourself?

Please post any comments you might have.  All ideas will be most welcome!
